First, there was the accident in Sembawang Way on March 16, when three workers were flung out after a lorry hit two vehicles and jumped the centre divider twice. Then last Thursday, a driver was killed when his sports car was hit in the side by a lorry in Yishun. In a third incident, I saw a dump truck come to grief on the ECP near Fort Road on Saturday. The impact threw the earth it was carrying over the top of the driver's cabin.

All these accidents seem to be speed related. I have noticed that many large lorries and trailers tend to speed along our expressways at night when traffic, as well as enforcement, seems to be light. Some of them even have the gall to travel on the outer lanes and honk at 'slower' vehicles abiding the 90 kmh speed limit.

Once, large vehicles were required to be fitted with speed limiting devices. Was it ever made mandatory or has the idea been scrapped? What will it take to make these drivers slow down? Imagine a 35-tonne container truck crashing into a block of flats at 90 kmh.
