THE outbreak of violence in different parts of Tibet and other Chinese provinces is unfortunate.
It is tempting for observers to take sides in the disputes between Tibetans clamouring for independence and the Chinese government which sees Tibet as an integral part of China.
It is better to let calm and good sense prevail so that the situation does not spiral into more destruction of property and loss of lives.
At an appropriate time, exiled Tibetan leaders should talk to Beijing, without the presence of the media, to resolve their disputes.
For now, demonstrations by supporters calling for the return of Tibet to the Tibetans are unhelpful. This will only force both sides to harden their stands which will leave little room for negotiation and manoeuvring, ending in use of force.
Those who are tempted to make a quick judgment against China should resist doing so - unless they are prepared to voice their support for the return of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States to the natives of those lands.
